How Progesterone Replacement
Therapy Works

As we age, our ovaries stop producing sex homones in our bodies. This change in the balance of the body’s sex hormones leads to a host of symptoms that can last from years to decades. It’s important to remember, you don’t have to feel this way. If you have a uterus, estrogen is prescribed with progesterone to prevent lining of the uterus from thickening (endometrial hyperplasia).

Frequently asked questions

Although the progestins in birth control and Winona’s HRT are different, some women do find improvement in their symptoms from the additional bio-identical progesterone.

During the onboarding there’s a place to leave special notes for your Winona doctor to review, just mention this there and he or she will review your profile and only prescribe the estrogen if appropriate.

Progesterone’s job is to make sure the uterus stays lean and healthy. If you have a uterus, and are taking estrogen, progesterone needs to be added to keep the uterus healthy. If you do not have a uterus, you can take just estrogen.

Yes, our progesterone is the micronized progesterone like Prometrium. It is bioidentical.

No, but we do offer a progesterone cream that we know has good absorption. Progesterone capsules may not absorb when applied to the skin.

Progesterone Replacement can help many symptoms. Once a woman hits her mid to late 30’s she can enter perimenopause, and progesterone production starts to decline. Once she reaches menopause, circulating progesterone levels are so low, they are similar to levels normally seen in men. Research shows that adding back the progesterone can improve brain function, mood as well as cardiovascular, and nervous system health. Progesterone can protect against uterine and breast cancer, helps fat metabolism, normalize blood sugar, reverse osteoporosis, improve thyroid function and act as a natural antidepressant, and reduce anxiety.
