Bloating is a common symptom during perimenopause and can persist even after your period ends, if you’re still having periods. In fact, uncomfortable bloating can begin as early as four years before menopause, as hormone levels start to decline, and may continue into postmenopause for some women.
As women age, levels of estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone steadily decrease. These hormonal fluctuations can lead to premenstrual-like symptoms like irritability, bloating, and breast tenderness, even when no period occurs. Shifts in estrogen and progesterone during perimenopause can also trigger symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or worsen existing GI conditions.
Hormone depletion during menopause can lead to water retention, increased gas, and slower digestion. This type of bloating can be uncomfortable and may negatively affect self-confidence. Many women report feeling as if they’ve gained weight or that their stomach feels swollen or distended.
HRT may help alleviate these symptoms by stabilizing hormone levels.
