Burning Mouth Syndrome

Burning mouth syndrome (BMS) is a condition that causes pain or discomfort in the mouth, lips, or tongue. The sensation is often described as burning, scalding, or tingling and may be accompanied by a metallic taste or even a loss of taste.

A burning sensation in the tongue or mouth during menopause can be linked to dry mouth, which can result from declining estrogen levels. Just as reduced estrogen can cause vaginal dryness, it can also decrease saliva production, leaving the mouth dry and more sensitive.
