Balance Issues and Vertigo

Vertigo, often described simply as dizziness or a sensation of being off-balance, is common in perimenopause. As estrogen levels decline significantly during menopause, the activity of estrogen receptors in the inner ear also decreases.

Why is this important for balance? The inner ear contains tiny crystals called otoconia that help the body maintain its sense of balance. A rapid drop in estrogen can reduce receptor activity in the inner ear, potentially disrupting the function of these crystals and contributing to balance issues.
